1. WHO ARE YOU? TELL US A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOURSELF ...
I'm Elle Drouin - a product stylist and commercial photographer based in NYC. I'm also social media director for my Instagram-famous dog @mochiandthecity.
2. WHAT DO YOU DO? TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
I've been an entrepreneur for 3 years but my business has definitely evolved over that time. I originally left my job as the marketing director of a fashion start-up to start my own marketing consulting business, but after several months I realized that I missed creating content.
Last year I launched the Styled Stock Society, a stylish stock subscription for female entrepreneurs, and over the past year I've focused on growing the Styled Stock Society membership as well as doing commercial photography projects for beauty and lifestyle brands.
3. A COUPLE QUICK QUESTIONS FOR FUN ...
+ Favorite morning drink? Water with lemon
+ Introvert or Extrovert? Introvert
+ Currently obsessed with ... My dog
+ Word or theme of the year? Streamline
+ Favorite indulgence? Levain Bakery chocolate chip walnut cookies
4. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO CREATE A LIVE MORE, WORK LESS BUSINESS + LIFESTYLE?
One of the reasons I started my business was to be able to live life on my own terms and not be restricted by "normal" 9-5 office hours and scheduled days off. When I first started my business I definitely worked more hours than I did at my previous job, but over time I've been able to scale my business to work less and enjoy more of the freedoms that working for myself allows.
Having a LIVE MORE, WORK LESS business means I'm not trading my time for money or feeling like I constantly hustle for the next sale. It also means doing more of what works, and less of what doesn't in order to maximize the efficiency of my business efforts and not waste time.
5. WHAT ARE SOME STEPS YOU'VE TAKEN IN YOUR BUSINESS TO INTENTIONALLY MAKE IT MORE ALIGNED WITH THE WAY YOU DESIRE TO LIVE YOUR LIFE?
When I first realized I didn't want to spend all my time consulting, I launched several online courses in order to have income streams that weren't tied directly to my time. I was attracted to the idea of "passive" income streams, but I missed content creation and having a more predictable income, so I launched the Styled Stock Society in order to have a recurring revenue stream.
Having a membership site means I'm able to scale my business and create content once while serving thousands of people. Because the majority of my work is digital, I can work from wherever and also work when I'm most productive - I definitely don't keep traditional work hours!
6. WHAT'S YOUR "WHY" FOR PURSUING A LIVE MORE, WORK LESS BUSINESS?
I don't want to feel like I always have to be "in the office" in order to make money - I want the freedom to be able to enjoy an afternoon outside just because the weather is nice or go on a last minute trip in the middle of the week when an opportunity comes up.
7. HOW DO YOU CURRENTLY STRUCTURE YOUR WORKDAY OR WEEK?
I don't really have "typical" days or weeks and I love it that way! I do try to batch tasks as much as possible so I have certain days when I'm shooting and others when I'm editing or working on marketing related tasks. I only schedule calls or meetings 2 days a week so the rest of the time I don't have to think about what I'm wearing or put makeup on. In terms of daily structure, I try to only check my email twice a day (first thing in the AM and then at the end of my workday) so I'm not distracted. And I always break for lunch - I can't be productive if I'm hungry!
8. WHAT TYPES OF HOBBIES, ACTIVITIES, AND OTHER FUN THINGS DO YOU INTENTIONALLY INCLUDE IN YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF YOUR BUSINESS?
Outside of my main business, I spend a lot of time with my dog Mochi - she has an Instagram account @mochiandthecity with 90k+ followers. She has a manager than handles her business requests, but I stay busy creating content for her social media accounts, taking her to photoshoots and event appearances, and traveling with her when we have brand partnerships outside of NYC. Technically "she" earns an income so it's like having another business, but it's fun work that I love to make time for because it doesn't come with the same stress or pressure of my own business (which actually pays the bills)!
Other than that I make time to read on daily basis, watch mindless reality tv, and take try to take advantage of #allthethings there are to do in NYC!
9. WHAT DO YOU FIND AS THE BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN YOUR ONGOING QUEST TO BUILD A LIVE MORE, WORK LESS BUSINESS + LIFESTYLE?
I struggle with truly relaxing. I feel the need to constantly be productive - even if I'm not "working."
I feel like I need to be working towards something so I turn all my hobbies into businesses! I don't mean to... I tend to get really focused when I enjoy something and somehow doing things "for fun" turns into doing things "for profit." But because I'm doing things that are actually fun (like managing my dog's Instagram account), it doesn't really feel like work!
